Impossibilities

There were some things that Kezrin simply avoided thinking about, and she was wary of breaking that rule.

Unfortunately, the mind had a stubborn way of thinking about things anyway, particularly when one is trying to fall asleep unsuccessfully.

She left Lounge feeling rather unsettled at the conversation she'd had and headed to Solendenus's home in Eversong. Thank goodness for portals. She'd taken refuge with him as protection against demons and a particular elf, and for self defense training. Kezrin had considered telling him she felt comfortable with moving out on her own again, but then the whole disaster with her family left her broke, and she wasn't ashamed to mooch off free room and board a bit longer.

Well, maybe a little bit ashamed.  She tried to shove that thought away, too.

So it certainly wasn't a lack of a comfortable bed or assurance of safety that was driving sleep away. The conversation at Lounge kept replaying in her head. There was utter confusion that she'd even consider something so ludicrous, so against everything she felt the past several years, for even one moment, all because of a comment TAE had made.

Kezrin had seriously pondered the possibility of hiring a demon as an AAMS courier.

That'd she even gotten to the point of being willing to talk to Nazxia at all was a bit of a surprise in itself.  As often as the succubus was around, it was impossible to ignore her forever.  Perhaps she'd simply finally gotten used to the unnerving feeling of one of her worst fears being in proximity, at least in Nazxia's case. Constant exposure had a way of breeding acceptance.

There were actually a few benefits to having a demon as a courier, beyond Kezrin's joke that "TAE could threaten to kill her all he wanted for making a delivery."  Demons could travel quickly and with relative safety.  There would be those who'd refuse service from a demon, but as Swizelle pointed out, Nazxia was getting good at disguising her true nature.

She was pretty sure there weren't any rules against the company hiring a demon, though it'd be the first time someone probably did so without hiring the corresponding warlock.  There was a brief moment of a different worry: if warlocks were people who made contracts with demons, what would that make Kezrin?  Was that the kind of thinking that started people down the path of wrongness?

Not that she'd even spoken to Nazxia about the idea.  Who knew if she'd even be interested.  Not everyone found being a courier appealing, particularly when you had to deal with picky clients.

She imagined sending Nazxia to handle TAE's next delivery.  The succubus wouldn't be intimidated by Moradinel, who was very insistent at Lounge that he'd only accept a delivery from Kezrin. Unfortunately, she considered that he probably had ways of hurting even demons.

She snorted at the idea of Swizelle polymorphing Nazxia into herself, and then sending the succubus to Moradinel.  He'd be enraged if he figured it out, of course, and then she'd find out for once and all whether he was serious about not wanting her dead.

And if he didn't notice... Multiple scenarios of what a demon could do in that situation flashed through her head.  She buried her face in her pillow.

There were some things that Kezrin simply avoided thinking about.
