Ye Olden Days, Part Two: Meet Lynyl, Starcrafter

Lynni appears deceptively short and slender, but her thin frame fits her well. 
Her manner is often rather quiet, and nothing she does is not without thought. 
Her fine auburn hair falls down to her shoulders, effectively framing her thin 
face with its small features and medium dark green eyes. Her skin is light, but 
bears a faint tanish color, and faded freckles are sparsely spread around her 
countenance, serving to enhance rather than to make her look younger.

Lynyl's shoulder.
Lynyl wears a delicate gold ring which looks to fit her just right. It appears 
to be perfect as the thin band sparkles under any amount of light.

She is awake and looks alert.

One of the reasons I loved RPing on Harper's Tale was because I played with my two best friends from real life.  We went to the same school, but lived far apart, so HT was our way of spending time together that wasn't in a classroom.   We each did our own thing, but eventually all of us wound up in the same guild: Starcraft. 

Starcraft was a "new" guild in that it didn't officially exist as a guild in the book series, although the books did include a new "sub-craft" of astronomers,  in the Smithcraft.  In fact, it was only created a few days before I created Lynyl!  I had no idea it existed. 

I created Lynyl on a whim.  She was supposed to be Lenyl, but I mistyped my email in the registration process, and the name got locked.  So I tried again as Lynyl.  Lynyl was the youngest daughter of the Holder (minor lord) of Metal Lake Hold.  She was shy and withdrawn, with a clumsy streak. 

She was sent to Ista to be apprenticed into the Smithcraft… but got lost and wound up at the steps of the new Starcraft Hall instead, as the crafters was occasionally called Starsmiths due to their origin.   She didn't really want to be a Smithcrafter, and after meeting the charismatic and energetic Craft Master Rosuma, she applied for apprenticeship at this interesting place instead.

((Or, if you prefer, the OOC story:  I was getting ready to ask around for a member of Smithcraft for an interview, when I got randomly /whispered by Rosuma with a 'want to join Starcraft'?  My very first guild invite!   Lynyl was one of the first people to join.))

My two friends, also altoholics, soon joined up as Lyana and Jorina.  Since it was the only guild we all belonged to, it was the one we started to participate in the most.  We did our classes and projects together whenever we could. 

We weren't really called astronomers in-game.  We were Starcrafters.  We used "distance viewers," called 'viewers or DVs to study the sky.  We were calendar keepers, predictors of a very important in-game stellar event known as "Thread," and excellent navigators.

Lynyl spent her days sweeping out the hall.  It was a very peaceful, calming activity for her, and let her greet anyone who came by.  She soon learned who everyone was, and started her studies in earnest.  It didn't take long to attend all the required classes to become a Senior Apprentice, and be authorized to teach beginner's classes in astronomy to the new people.   She originally specialized in optics, but later switched to stellar cartography.  She delighted in the artistry of making beautiful, as well as practical, maps.  

It was fun being a formative part of the guild. We were making things up as we went, inventing classes, and just inventing what we did.  When I started, there wasn't mentorship program, or craft specializations, or a book of standard constellations.  Creating constellations was a guild projection, and I contributed three of them.   When Lynyl taught a class as a Senior Apprentice, there wasn't a log she could look at to see what someone else did.  I just made it up!  We set the precedent in those first months for everything that followed.

Eventually, the game changed to accommodate us.  We acquired our "guild ability," which was creating DVs that could look several rooms away.  Someone programmed "stars" into the sky you could when you typed "look up" at night, using the constellations we invented.  We became popular; you could usually count on a Starcrafter to be online.

Lynyl changed from a timid girl who liked the idea of being in a quiet guild to a teacher and organizer.  She went from clumsy to disciplined and meticulous.  She wasn't a big player in the guild; Lyana and Jorina honestly contributed way more than I ever did.  Lyana eventually became the Staracraft Master  (the guild GM), and Jorina was a journeyman and the guild's webmaster. Yet, Lynyl had own niche, and Starcraft was the only guild on HT that truly felt like "home."
